Now you are almost settled in Germany but don’t get excited! There are a lot of things to do before you can finally say you are settled! Let’s discuss briefly about the insurances.
Insurance in Germany is an important aspect of daily life for many individuals and businesses. There are different types of insurance policies available in Germany, including health insurance, liability insurance, and many more.
Medical Health Insurance: You are required to have a valid medical health insurance in Germany. You can opt for either Public Insurance or Private Insurance depending upon your salary. If your salary is €70-75K and above, you have an option of choosing either of them but if your salary is less than 70K, you don’t have an option and have to take Public Insurance. Don’t worry, you are not losing anything – Public is as good as Private with few differences. You can use your friendly search engine to look for the difference if you have the option of taking Public or Private. One of the best insurers in public domain is TK Health Insurance. They speak English and have a helpline number to assist people. Call them and they will inform you the process for enrolment. Once you have the enrolment certificate, provide a copy to your employer so that your contribution could be deducted, and employer pay their contribution directly to them. However, your office might also suggest a good public insurance – many organizations have their own public health insurance scheme.
Usual cost is around €400-500 per month and equal amount is paid by your office directly towards the insurer.
Note: You don’t have to pay anything extra for your non-earning dependent.
Liability Insurance: Usually it is recommended to have liability insurance while in Germany. This is important to save you from unexpected financial troubles. For example, you are walking on the street and accidently shrugged someone and breaking their phone. In that case, you don’t need to pay, and your insurance will pay them for the damaged phone. You can look for different insurer online, but our suggestion is to get it from Getsafe. You can install the app and purchase it directly from the app.
Note: Own damage is not included in this insurance. For example, you broke something at your home which was provided by your landlord, it is not covered by liability insurance.
Content Insurance: From the name, it is quite clear that this is to ensure that the content at your home is insured from any damage, theft or loss. Again, there are many insurances provider and you can compare it online. You can also take this from Getsafe.
Legal Insurance: When we are in a new country and don’t know much about the legal system, we might need some help from a lawyer. Lawyer’s fee is not economical, and it may put a dent in your saving and hence you might need a legal insurance in Germany. It is not mandatory and it’s up to you whether you want to take it or not. However, it’s always safe to have it as you never know when you might need it. Again, you can take it from Getsafe application.
